In view of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Aspect, Clauser, and Zeilinger:

Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger have each conducted groundbreaking experiments using entangled quantum states, where two particles behave like a single unit even when they are separated. Their results have cleared the way for new technology based upon quantum information.

And the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics awarded to Bennet, Brassard, Deutsch, & Shor:

For foundational work in the field of quantum information

The theme of this semester's Workshop Seminar will revolve around these topics with the following lecture plan:

  1. Review of Quantum Mechanics
    • e.g., Weinberg's Lectures on QM chapter 3,
    • or Shankar chapter 4
    • or Sakurai §§1.2-1.7
    • NOTE: it is important to make sure that all the technology needed for the next lecture are covered.
  2. EPR paradox and the Bell inequalities
    • e.g. Lectures on QM by Weinberg Ch. 12
    • The original papers by EPR, Bell, and 1982 Aspect et al. can be found here
  3. Precision tests of QM and Bell's inequalities
  4. Collider and cosmological tests of Bell's inequality -- there are many references
  5. Lectures 5 to 10/11: probably follow one of:
